Thailand Offers Visa-Free Entry to Chinese Tourists
Thailand's cabinet has announced a temporary scheme allowing Chinese tourists visa-free entry starting from the end of September. The move comes as Thailand's vital tourism sector, which contributes nearly 20% of its GDP, has faced challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic and shifting travel patterns.
Chinese tourists, the largest group of visitors to Thailand, have been slow to return. Under the current rules, they can apply for a visa on arrival but must show travel insurance, hotel bookings, and proof of funds exceeding US$280 for a maximum 15-day stay.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin stated that the new scheme, running from Sep 25 to Feb 29 next year, aims to test its impact on the Thai economy. However, specific details about the duration of stay were not provided.
Officials estimate that this scheme, which also includes Kazakhstan, could bring in a total of 30 million visitors this year, a significant increase from the 11 million in 2022. It's seen as a quick win for Thailand, with tourism being a crucial economic engine for the country.
